Black / Wight   This project began by studying the work of artist Bart Hess which deals with transformation of the human body sheathed in elastic materials. Of particular interest was the “box-in-a-box” problem as described by Jeff Kipnis in 1993, and the ability of an incongruent inner figure and outer mass to achieve complex interstitial spaces. This proposal is an investigation into the implications of invisible force applied to incongruent figures and mass, and the ability of a graphic tattoo to enhance massing morphology while maintaining its own character. The project focuses on articulation in both the mass and the tattoo through an exploration of intricate and ambiguous language – smooth, spiky, faceted and soft, all at the same time.  The program is a re-envisioning of the Broad Museum in Los Angeles. Two idiosyncratic inner figures house the art storage, auditorium and administrative wing. These are enveloped by an outer membrane, and the tension between them is acted out in the massing morphology. A second membrane lines the interstitial space between the figures and the outer skin. Finally the entire mass is nestled into an urban plaza where all the energy is focused on the corner, mimicking its eccentric neighbor.  The tattoo morphs with the outer skin as inner figures apply a directional force to it.
